(We’re sure you knew that. We just enjoy analogies.) Sure, the hotel/casino in Vegas might have a beam of light visible from space, but we bet you'll find a hot-air balloon ride over the Valley of Kings much more illuminating. (Editor's note: Our list was compiled before political unrest prompted many countries to issue travel warnings for Egypt. If you're currently planning a trip to Egypt, please consider the risks and monitor your government's travel alerts.) Upon arrival, you’ll be escorted to your 5-star Nile Cruise for embarkation. The nilometer on Rhoda Island dates back to 861, when it was built where an older Nilometer had been, based on a design by Afraganus, a famous astronomer. The massive measuring stick had markings on it to indicate where the water level was at any given time, information the priests would use to determine what conditions the future held: drought, which would mean famine; desirable, which would mean just enough overflow to leave good soil for farming; or flood, which could be catastrophic. And the stunning Manial Palace, a residence with a mix of European and Islamic architectural styles. For a relaxing experience, take a felucca ride on the Nile with lunch aboard.
